Sony Prepping Devs for Summer… New PS5 on the Horizon? Their Ray Tracing Talk is Sus!

Believe it or not, but Sony is about to release one of the most powerful PS5 consoles, possibly at the end of this year.

As reports are coming in on the detailed specifications which have surfaced recently, Techvizer took the chance to acquire the full list of specs for Sony’s upcoming console. Sources tell us that Sony plans that developers are already being asked by the community to polish up the ray tracing feature for the upcoming console.

Breaking News, Gamers! PS5 Getting a Supercharged Sibling?

Rumor has it Sony’s got a secret project brewing, code-named “Trinity.” This mysterious machine is the brand new PS5 Pro model, packing a serious graphical punch. We’re talking a beefier GPU and a CPU with higher teraflops & better rendering, pushing those frame rates to the limits.

Imagine playing your favorite games with lighting so real you’ll swear you can feel the sun on your skin! Sony is encouraging developers to use graphic features like ray tracing more in their games and asking them to label it as “Trinity Enhanced” (PS5 Pro Enhanced) to add more significant enhancements within its games.

The GPU rendering on the PS5 Pro is expected to be about 45 percent faster than the standard PlayStation 5 as per the documents outline for the upcoming console. As far as the PS5 Pro GPU is concerned, it will be much larger and a faster system memory to support improved ray tracing in most future games. Sony claims that the ray tracing architecture of the new PS5 Pro will provide speed as much as up to 3x better compared to the regular PS5. For now, Sony is expecting game developers to send out a single package that will support games for both PS5 & PS5 Pro consoles where existing games will be patched and enhanced for better performance.

Sony’s Next-Gen Console Enhancements and Performance

Developers currently have the capability to order test kits, signaling Sony’s proactive stance on preparing for the upcoming PS5 Pro launch. According to Insider Gaming’s initial report, Sony has set the bar high, expecting all games submitted for certification in August to seamlessly integrate with the PS5 Pro. The anticipation builds as rumors swirl about the console’s release, slated for the 2024 holiday season.

Not only does the PS5 Pro promise advancements in its GPU department, but the developer documents also talk about how the new console, “Trinity” will target 3.85 GHz CPU frequency. It’s almost a 10 percent more boost compared to the regular PS5. Sony will be offering developers the ability to pick between, “standard mode” at 3.5 GHz or the “high CPU frequency mode” at 3.85 GHz.

The PS5 Pro is designed in such a way that if the console pushes hard, its CPU power will eventually dial back and the extra juice produced will divert to the GPU.

There are also a few changes made within the system’s memory for developers. The standard PS5 memory runs at 448GB/s but with the PS5 Pro, users will see a 28 percent additional memory as much as up to 576GB/s on the PS5 Pro.

Since the memory system is more efficient on the PS5 Pro, users will experience a bandwidth gain exceeding as much as up to 28 percent according to Sony.

The faster memory and bigger pool of Sony’s brand new PlayStation will support the Spectral Super Resolution, or PSSR for short. Think of it as Sony’s way to compete with fancy upscaling tech like Nvidia’s DLSS and AMD’s FSR.

PSSR will increase the frame rates and image quality for PlayStation games.

To make it work, Sony builds a special machine learning engine right into the PS5 Pro, where the new console is ready to crunch numbers at 300 TOPS at 8 bit computation (that’s tech talk for superfast!).

The new architecture is designed to support Sony’s custom PSSR upscaling solution, replacing the game’s existing temporal anti-aliasing or upsampling implementation. Sony’s inputs are akin to DLSS or FSR, offering full HDR support and accompanied by approximately 250 MB of memory allocation, making adequate memory allocation on the PS5 Pro crucial. Moreover, Sony claims to have reduced the latency involved in upscaling a 1080p image to 4K to just 2ms.

The company is currently working on further latency reduction and aims to enable the new PS5 Pro to support resolutions of up to 8K.
